India’s ICMR and Ministry of AYUSH to research integrated medicine

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has entered a memorandum of agreement (MoA) with the Ministry of Ayush to carry out research in the field of integrated medicine.

The MoA expects to boost India’s health infrastructure and support the integration of Ayush (ayurveda, yoga and naturopathy, unani, siddha and homoeopathy), bringing it into the mainstream.

It will help both health streams to access convergence and synergy opportunities to undertake health research and boost research capacity.

ICMR and the Ministry of Ayush will focus on public health research into diseases of national importance where potential therapies may exist, to create an evidence base for wider acceptance of these therapies.

The ministry and ICMR will also form a joint working group that will meet quarterly to explore new areas of partnership.

It will focus on developing and implementing joint research projects and will design and hold conferences, workshops and seminars.

The MoA allows scholars, trainees and researchers access to improved instrumentation systems and other infrastructure, in line with current rules and regulations.

India’s Health and Family Welfare Union Minister Dr Mansukh Mandaviya stated: “Combining traditional knowledge with modern research and innovation, the MoA signed between the two institutions will boost ayurveda to further build its identity on the basis of scientific evidence.”
